  • Move2Green: Driving the shift to net-zero heavy logistics

Logistics currently accounts for roughly seven percent of global emissions, making the need for change clear. Kalmar is tackling this challenge with Move2Green, a strategic five-year R&D program and ecosystem launched in spring 2025.

Co-funded by Business Finland’s Leading Company Challenge (Veturi), Move2Green’s bold vision is to enable customers’ net-zero logistics chains in ports, terminals, and other heavy industrial logistics by 2045. The program's core focus on electrification and data-enabled services is a vital part of Kalmar’s technology strategy. It supports our company-wide goal of reducing Scope 3 CO₂ emissions by 40% from the 2023 baseline by 2030.

To advance this industry-leading initiative, Kalmar will invest €50 million, supplemented by an additional €20 million from Business Finland.

    Four key themes

Move2Green drives innovation across four key themes.

See the Move2Green roadmap (pdf) for more information.

    Building a global innovation ecosystem

To realize this ambitious vision, Kalmar is building the Move2Green ecosystem, bringing together around 150 partners, including industrial companies, technology providers, research institutes, and universities. This powerful innovation network is set to drive breakthrough solutions in heavy material handling worldwide. Furthermore, the network accesses up to €50 million in joint funding from Business Finland.

    Business Finland's Leading Company Funding

Through Leading company challenge competitions, Business Finland seeks research and development projects for funding from companies that operate globally or aim for global operations. These projects should tackle major future challenges and make a significant impact on Finland’s competitiveness. Leading companies are expected to significantly increase their R&D activities in Finland and build ecosystems aimed at new business ventures. In addition to funding the leading company’s projects, Business Finland also offers funding for R&D projects from partners within leading companies’ ecosystem.
